Speidel, who was a heralded recruit out of Indiana, suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of a car accident in 2015 before he arrived on campus for his freshman year. The loss dropped UAlbany into a tie for fifth with UMBC with one game remaining. Romani Hansen scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Stony Brook outlasted UAlbany for a three-point win in a game in which both teams struggled offensively. Despite storming back to take a one-point lead at halftime, Stony Brook held off UAlbany to hand the Great Danes their season-high fifth-straight defeat. The Great Danes hosted their regular-season home finale last Saturday, against Stony Brook, and held a pregame ceremony to honor five players for the annual Senior Night celebration. Ahmad Clark and Cameron Healy each scored 22 points, while for Vermont, reigning America East Player of the Year Anthony Lamb went off for 33. UAlbany slowly clawed back, cutting the game to just nine, before ultimately falling by 11, 86-75. In the second half, the Catamounts pulled away, using a 15-0 run to take a 21-point lead. The Danes played the Catamounts tight through the first half, and entered the break trailing by two after a wild finish that featured three alternating three-pointers, capped off by a three-quarter court buzzer-beater by Vermont to take the lead. UAlbany closed out the first half of its conference schedule by hosting first place and defending America East champion Vermont. UAlbany is 9-25 in the regular season against Vermont since joining the America East, including 6-12 on the road, and has lost the last six matchups. In 47 games against the Catamounts, UAlbany is 14-33, including 14-28 in the America East era. Vermont is led by reigning America East Player of the Year Anthony Lamb, who scored 33 points in the first game against UAlbany this season and will be honored Tuesday night as part of Vermont's Senior Night ceremony, which will also be the final regular-season game played in Patrick Gymnasium before the Catamounts open their new facility next season. Offensively, the Catamounts rank second in scoring and FG%, and also rank second in rebounding margin.
They also lead in defensive rebounding, scoring margin, turnover margin, and assist/turnover ratio. They are the top defensive team in the America East, leading in scoring defense and FG% defense. The Catamounts are the first-place team in the America East, three games clear of the field.
